What motivated you to pursue higher AYSO referee certification? Would you recommend referees upgrade?
“I started out as a coach in AYSO. I went for my Intermediate Referee Certification to learn more about the game so I could improve my knowledge of the game and become a better coach.
A few years went by and I met some great people that were well experienced referees. They encouraged me to take the Advanced Course and then the National Course.
Refereeing started out as just something to do until I realized what it meant to referee as a team. Once I found friends to do games with every Saturday, refereeing became really fun.
I would definitely recommend referees upgrade. It's not about the badge it's about the experience. The people you meet and the memories you make together are priceless. While it feels good to wear the badge you've earned at the end, you realize that the journey was what made it the most memorable experience. And a badge is just a badge.”
National Referee, Jon (Age 30)
“What motivates me as a referee is the challenge of becoming a better referee through taking referee courses and through continual education. I want to give back to my region and community by giving them the best volunteer referee I can be. Lastly, the Referees in my region with higher certifications motivate me by saying that I can and I’m capable in reaching my goals with hard work and dedication.”
Advanced Referee, Louie (Age 45)
“I would definitely recommend it. You gain much better clarification on some of the tougher things to judge in a match. You also get a chance to discuss with other referees some of the challenges they’ve faced and ways to deal with them.”
Advanced C Referee, Aaron (Age 38)
“Refereeing higher division games with upper badged referees. It’s encouraging to see these guys manage the match at hand and I always wanted to know where and how the got the skills they had. Referee classes are a great way to get that knowledge.“
National C Referee, Brandon (Age 38)
“My peers motivated me to upgrade as a referee. Following the Intermediate Referee Course, the Advanced Referee Course soon came after. My motivation to upgrade to an Advanced Referee was to be the youngest Advanced Referee in Area N, which at the time I was 16. After I accomplished my goal, I continued to do many more matches. There is so much to learn from refereeing, so I encourage referees to upgrade, learn, and challenge themselves to do higher level matches.”
Advanced Referee, Gabriel (Age 18)
“For better knowledge of The Laws. To become a better referee. Definitely upgrading is good for those who want to give back what the sport has given to them.”
Intermediate C Referee, Eric
“Learning from experience refs about rules and calls. Because of my age made it hard to go higher and may not pass the physical test.”
Intermediate, Roland (Age 66)
